(White Sands National Monument, NM) 2 degrees, clear blue skies, 2 inches of snow last night

The temperature really dropped last night and we had about 2 inches of snow with lots of drifts. This area is not really equipped for this type of weather and the major road in front of the monument was closed. The staff could not come in today so the park was closed...except for the volunteers who live here. That's right, we had the whole park to ourselves. Now that is a great perk. We all bundled up this morning and went out into the dunefield to see what was going on. It was spectacular.

We went out twice. What a fantastic snow day! Jimmy and Sam (Judy's dog) joined in the fun too.
The sand actually looked brown next to the snow. Usually it appears to be dazzling white. Under the sand here at White Sands is 30 feet of water. The sand wicks up the water and is always damp. Today it was frozen in place and very easy to walk on.
We may not be paid for the hours we work but the benefits sure are priceless.
I love the photo of the sand and snow! Outstanding!! John has very good taste in football teams...very good.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous photos Carol. I particularly like the first one showing the visitor center. White Sands National Monument is very pretty on any day but I think the snow really does add to the natural beauty.
ReplyDeleteI saw your name(s) over at the NPS volunteer site today. Do you post there very much?

ReplyDeletegreat pictures of a lovely day in the 'snowy sand'!!!
ReplyDeleteWow and it's only Dec. We're almost afraid to come back that way in Jan. I guess we'll have to brave the weather and head your way then
ReplyDeleteThe photos of the snow on the sand are great. What a memory!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty pictures. Jimmy looks so cute in the snow!
ReplyDeleteNice to have a snow day! That's sort of different when you are so used to the sand all the time. Looks like the dogs were sure enjoying themselves but it looks too cold for us.
