Boca Chica Kayak Trip

Stork Island, FL (76 degrees, blue skies)

A couple of years ago we went out with Blue Planet Kayak Eco Tours to try some sea kayaking.  The trip was great and we learned so much about the creatures below. This time we went out with Jen and our friends JC and Bev.  Our guide was very knowledgeable  and there were about 10 kayaks in our group.

It was an easy paddle and we wove in and out of mangroves.  Our guide told us  a lot about them and found some cool sea life to show us.

Upside down jellyfish

The upside down jelly fish were everywhere as we entered the mangroves. They lie upside down on the floor waving their arms. They mostly eat the algae that collect on top of them.

Starfish or Sea Star

We learned some weird facts about how an innocent looking starfish eats its food. Remember Peach in Nemo? The starfish arms have tubes which can open clams or the arms can wrap around a mollusk and break the muscle. The stomach of the starfish then protrudes through the hole in the middle. Next it engulfs the food and partially digesting it before sucking or pulling it back inside. Our guide said they are quite the predators of the sea. Who knew?

The water was so clear and the white sandy bottom made it easy to spot sea life below. It was a nice trip and a great way to try sea kayaking. On our own we would have missed most of the interesting show below

  1. I can't, because of back problems, kayak, but I have a lot of friends in a women's camping group that do a lot of it, and they have a blast. Some of them have two or three kayaks, and always come back with such interesting stories.

Sounds like a good idea to go on a tour with someone who knows something. I love the keys in Florida. Another couple who do a lot of kayaking are Sherry and David from the blog Inthedirectionofour dreams. Sherry is a great story teller.

Thanks for the interesting read. I love your little buddy. I have a friend who has a tri-color. Such neat little dogs.
