Scenic Cruise On The Ottawa River and Fun Paddle Trip on the Rideau River

Ottawa, Canada (62 degrees, clear blue skies, windy)

Ottawa is a very scenic city and sits on the confluence of three splendid rivers - the Ottawa, Gatineau, and the Rideau. Becky planned a fun boat trip for all of us on the Paula-D. It was an enjoyable trip and our guide on the boat told us about all the buildings we were passing. The weather was perfect. Across from Ottawa is the city of Gatineau in Quebec. Sit back and see these two beautiful cities from the water level.

Just as we were finishing we saw an amphibus called the Lady Dive enter the water. What a hoot!

What a splendid day to spend on the river.

The previous day we took our kayaks with Fran and Randy for their first dip in Canadian waters on the Rideau River. We found sort of a launch point near the Billings Bridge. It was a step decline to the river but we were quickly out on the pretty river for a short paddle.

There were a few rapid areas made more challenging by very shallow water. Randy gave us some hints on how to read the river. I wasn't as successful in navigating through them but everyone else did very well.

I really enjoyed the calm part of the river best!
My kayak had been repaired in New York after developing a leak in Indiana on a paddle trip. It still is leaking a little bit and will need some more attention. John and Randy are putting their heads together to develop a plan.  I love a man with a plan.

So we have now been on all three rivers surrounding Ottawa. What a beautiful city to explore.

  1. That looks really nice. You are off to a wonderful start to the summer. I'm sure John will hatch a good plan for kayak repair!

  2. We didn't actually make it to Ottawa when we did our northern route trip a few years ago. Next on the bucket list are the Maritime Provinces, and of course, we will have to check out Ottawa. You have some great photos of what appears to be a lovely city.

  3. Really enjoyed your post. I saw most of what you did while staying with my daughter but need to go back and do some paddling.
