We are on the south side of Gros Morne National Park staying outside a charming village called Woody Point. We arrived in fog but were struck by the amazing beauty all around us. There are beautiful lakes, striking cliffs, and unusual wildflowers along the trails. Our campground for the next few days is right alongside the road overlooking the water. It's called Water's Edge. It doesn't have much in the way of amenities and once again no WFYI but it makes up for it with the dramatic scenery. Two of our friends even saw a humpback whale in the bay directly across from us.
We stopped by the beautiful Visitor Center and got lots of information from the very friendly staff about hiking and things to do in the area. They have great WYFI too. It's situated high up in the mountains overlooking the valley (see picture at top of post) There is a overlook on the third level which is a great place to see the park as it stretches out below you.
They suggested we take the Tablelands Trail the next day. It's a very barren landscape with some very unusable rock formations (peridontite). It's one of only a few places on earth where you can actually walk on the earths mantle. The rock was forced up millions of years ago when plates collided and pushed the rock to the surface. It emits some type of chemical which keeps most plant life at bay. However, after walking on what seemed to be a completely barren rock we were surprised and delighted to see some plant life.

The trail was about 2 miles and fairly easy to navigate. It runs along the base of the mountain. John and Barry decided to climb the mountain to check it out further. They both enjoyed the views from way up high.

It was a very interesting hike. Later in the day we attempted to hike Green Gables. However, it was much more difficult to maneuver among all the rock and much longer than expected. Everyone coming back looked exhausted and I was the first one to give it up and go back. Later our friends also quit. It's a hike which really needs a full day to enjoy or much younger legs!
We are planning another boat trip tomorrow. Our group really enjoys the boat trips and its a great way to see the area and small villages dotting the coast line. Stay tuned.
